The Ideal Barbados Island Tour – Part 2

The Ideal Barbados Island Tour – Part 2

Highlands, Caves & the Wild East Coast
By Jonathan Simpson – Real Estate Advisor, Realtors Limited

After a night out—often something like the Harbour Lights dinner show on the South Coast—it’s time to see a very different Barbados: the central highlands, Harrison’s Cave, the Scotland District and the East Coast. This is Part 2 of my Ideal Barbados Island Tour, and it shows you the island’s interior and Atlantic side, where the landscape is greener, wilder and wonderfully open.

Through Warrens & Up Shop Hill – Into the Heart of the Island

We leave the coast behind and drive through Warrens, one of Barbados’ main commercial hubs with offices, shops and services. This is a reminder that Barbados is a functioning country, not just a resort—something many future owners find reassuring.

From Warrens, we head up Shop Hill into St Thomas, where you quickly feel the air change: cooler, greener, more rural.

Earthworks Pottery – Colour, Craft & a View

Our first stop is Earthworks Pottery, a locally famous workshop overlooking a lush valley. It’s a great place to:

  • Stretch your legs after the drive
  • Watch artisans at work
  • Pick up colourful, hand-made ceramics that make excellent souvenirs or house pieces

I always enjoy seeing clients find something here that later ends up in their Barbados home or their kitchen abroad—a little daily reminder of the island.

Harrison’s Cave – Underneath Barbados

From Earthworks, we continue into the hills to reach Harrison’s Cave, one of Barbados’ signature attractions. The modern visitor centre and infrastructure make it easy to enjoy, whether you’re adventurous or prefer a gentler experience.

Options typically include:

  • Tram tour – A comfortable, guided ride through the cave’s chambers, past stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams.
  • Zip line or adventure trails – For those who like a bit more adrenaline.
  • Nature trails and viewpoints around the site.

It’s a reminder that Barbados is not a flat coral island with just beaches; there is a whole world of caverns, gullies and ridges below and above the surface.

Scotland District & Scotland View Bar – Big Skies, Big Views

Leaving Harrison’s Cave, we head towards the Scotland District—the rugged, geologically unique area in the north-east of the island. On the way, a stop at something like Scotland View Bar (or a similar vantage point) gives you:

  • Sweeping views over the rolling hills and out to the Atlantic
  • A chance to enjoy a cold drink in the breeze
  • A sense of just how varied Barbados’ terrain really is

This is a very different mood from the West Coast: wide horizons, fewer buildings, and a feeling of being closer to nature.

Lunch at Sand Dunes, Belleplaine – A Classic East Coast Stop

From the high viewpoints, we wind down toward Belleplaine and the famous Sand Dunes Bar & Restaurant—a favourite spot with locals and visitors alike on the East Coast.

Here, you might enjoy:

  • Flying fish, grilled or fried
  • Macaroni pie, rice and peas, and local vegetables
  • Plantain, coleslaw and other Bajan staples
  • A slice of Bajan rum cake to finish

All of it comes with the soundtrack of Atlantic waves and the ever-present breeze.

East Coast Drive & Browne’s Beach – Closing the Loop

After lunch, we follow the East Coast Road south, passing through Cattlewash, Bathsheba and the Atlantic shorelines that photographers love. The sea is wilder here, and the beaches feel open and untamed.

Eventually, we cut back across the island and return to the South Coast, often ending with a swim at Browne’s Beach or another South Coast bay. As the sun drops and we sink our toes into the sand, it’s a good moment to reflect: in two days we’ve seen the West Coast, the north, the interior and the Atlantic side—four different faces of one island.

FAQs – Part 2 of the Ideal Barbados Island Tour

  1. Do I need a car for this part of the tour?
Yes, having a car or a private driver makes a huge difference. The route covers hills, countryside and multiple stops that aren’t easily reached by public transport, especially if you want to move at your own pace.
  2. Is Harrison’s Cave suitable for all ages?
The tram tour is very accessible and works well for families, older visitors and anyone who prefers a gentler experience. The more adventurous options are there for those who want them, but they’re not compulsory.
  3. What makes the Scotland District and East Coast special compared to the West Coast?
The East Coast is wilder, less developed and dramatically beautiful. Cliffs, big surf and sweeping bays replace the calm water and resort-lined beaches of the West Coast. It’s an essential part of understanding Barbados as a whole.
  4. How does this tour help someone considering buying property inland or on the East Coast?
Part 2 gives you a feel for inland communities and quieter coastal pockets—ideal if you’re drawn to space, views, cooler breezes or a more local, low-key lifestyle. Some of my clients discover they prefer a hillside or rural base after experiencing this side of Barbados.
  5. Can we integrate property viewings into this tour as well?
Yes. We can easily add a few carefully selected properties—perhaps a home in St Thomas, a ridge-front villa with views, or a more secluded East Coast retreat—without losing the relaxed, exploratory feel of the day.

Turn Your Island Tour into a Long-Term Barbados Plan

If you’ve followed Parts 1 and 2 of this tour—on paper or in person—you already have a much clearer picture of how Barbados looks, feels and flows. The next step, if you’re considering a purchase, is to translate that into a property strategy that fits your lifestyle, budget and long-term plans.

That’s where my role, and our team at Realtors Limited, truly comes in.
